What Is Breast Augmentation?

breast surgery

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures among women, with 2.2 million procedures done in 2022. This equates to a 29% increase compared to 2021. But despite its popularity, many people still have questions about what breast augmentation is, how it works, and whether it’s right for them.

If these are questions you’ve been asking yourself, you’ve come to the right place. This blog post covers everything from breast augmentation to recovery.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

More commonly known as a “boob job” among patients, breast augmentation is a procedure that aims to increase the size, shape, and fullness of a woman’s breasts. It achieves this using breast implants or fat transferred from another part of the body. It’s also sometimes known as augmentation mammoplasty.

Why Get Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Personal preferences often play a significant role in the decision to undergo breast augmentation. However, women also consider this procedure for several reasons. These include:

Enhance Body Proportions

For women who feel that their breasts are too small or disproportionate to their bodies, this surgery can help with achieving a more balanced and curvy figure.

Restore Lost Volume

Pregnancy and weight loss can cause breast tissue to shrink, resulting in smaller breasts. Breast augmentation can help restore that volume.

Correct Asymmetry

Some women have naturally uneven breasts, while others may develop asymmetry. This may be due to injury, surgery, or other factors. Breast augmentation can help correct asymmetry, ensuring that both breasts are proportional.

Help with Self-Esteem

Small or sagging breasts can affect a woman’s self-esteem and confidence. Breast augmentation can help give women a fuller bust line.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Not everyone is a good candidate for this surgery. That’s why consulting with a plastic surgeon who can assess your medical history, physical condition, and expectations is essential. There are a few factors plastic surgeons look for when determining good candidacy.

These include:

Dissatisfaction With Current Breast Size

The main requirement is simply unhappiness regarding your current breast size or proportions. You need to have a clear concept and goals of how you’d like your breasts to look after surgery – both in terms of size and shape.

Breasts That Have Lost Volume

If your breasts have lost fullness and deflated in appearance due to ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight fluctuations, you can be an excellent candidate for augmentation. Surgery can help restore what has been lost over time. However, the skin needs to still have enough elasticity for the best contour results.

General Good Health

Like any surgery, your candidacy depends greatly on having an otherwise healthy lifestyle and fitness level. Moreover, women with high blood pressure, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders may not qualify for this procedure. The same goes for those who smoke or have a history of smoking. Being in good health lowers the risk of surgical complications.

Emotional Readiness

The surgeon will also want to ensure that you have a positive body image outlook and the mental and emotional readiness to undergo this surgery. After all, breast augmentation results in permanent changes to your appearance. Being educated on the procedure and having social support can help with the transition.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation on the Gold Coast

The breast augmentation procedure varies depending on the type of implant, the incision site, and the placement of the implant. It’s usually done under general anaesthesia and takes about one to two hours. The surgeon will make an incision in one of the following locations:

  • Inframammary: along the crease under the breast
  • Periareolar: around the edge of the areola

The surgeon will create a pocket within the breast area to insert the implant. This could be placed either behind the breast tissue (sub glandular) or under the chest muscle (sub muscular). Finally, the surgeon will close the incision with sutures, tape, or glue.

That said, you’ll need to wear a special bra or bandage to support your breasts and reduce swelling for a few weeks afterwards. Some patients experience some pain, bruising, and numbness in the breasts and nipples.

The surgeon may prescribe painkillers and antibiotics to aid your recovery. They’ll also provide after-care instructions on how to care for the incisions and implants. This includes regular checkups to monitor your progress.

The recovery time varies from person to person, but generally, you can expect to resume light activities within a few days. You’ll be able to continue exercising within 4-6 weeks and see final results within six months.

Does Medicare Cover Breast Explant Surgery?

breast surgery

Breast augmentation is a procedure that can have a big impact on a person’s life. With more symmetrical breasts, women can feel more confident and comfortable in their own skin. Although there will be minor scarring, it’s usually covered up by the breast itself or discreetly placed by your plastic surgeon.

However, there may come a time when you need to undergo breast explant surgery in order to treat a medical issue. It may also be that your current implants are causing side effects and potentially endangering your health.

But is breast implant removal covered by Medicare in Australia, and what are some alternative payment options?

What Is Breast Explant Surgery?

Breast explant surgery refers to the removal of breast implants and any scar tissue formed around the implants. The goal is to maintain a natural body profile. Scar tissue is removed due to it being a side effect of implantation.

There are a variety of reasons why a person may opt for breast explant surgery.

To begin with, a person may decide that they do not desire the implants for aesthetic or mental health reasons. They may regret the surgery or simply wish to revert back to how they looked before.

Alternatively, patients may need a breast explant procedure if their current implants are causing issues. Cheaper implants may rupture and leak silicone. They may also cause irritation and further scarring.

Breast Implant Removal and Medicare

The big question is whether or not Medicare covers breast explant surgery. As you may know, a breast augmentation procedure, in most cases, is not covered by private health insurance. It’s considered a type of electric cosmetic surgery, so it isn’t medically necessary.

However, there are certain situations in which you can get Medicare to cover some of the breast implant removal.

Medicare items 45553 and 45554 cover removal and replacement with another prosthesis if there are any medical complications. This may be due to a developmental abnormality or if removal would cause a deformity.

For example, your implant may cause significant scarring or the development of cancer in very rare cases. It may also rupture and cause a medical emergency that Medicare would cover.

Keep in mind that Medicare may not cover the entire cost of the removal procedure. Free plastic surgery may be available in public hospitals, but there will be a significant waiting period. Medicare only offers a partial subsidy for procedures performed at private practices.

If you need immediate surgery, you may need to look into alternative sources of funding.

Other Funding Options

Even though Medicare can cover some of your breast explant surgery, that isn’t always the case. Unless it’s a medical emergency, you’ll most likely need to find some alternative way to pay for your procedure. These include, but are not limited to, private health insurance, medical loans, and personalised payment plans.

Private Health Insurance

One of the first options to consider is looking into private health insurance options. Many private insurance plans offer coverage for breast explant surgery for medical reasons.

They’re also more likely to offer more coverage than Medicare would, especially if you opt to use a private practice rather than go through the hospital. Always make sure to double-check their policies and coverage limits before you commit to one.

Medical Loans

Another way to help afford a breast implant removal is with medical loans. Some financial institutions offer these as a way to help individuals afford surgeries and medical procedures.

The main concerns with any kind of loan are the interest rates and repayment terms. If you fail to pay them back on time, you may be stuck with a much larger debt than you expected. However, they’re a reliable source of money if you follow the terms and conditions.

Always opt for a legitimate financial institution when obtaining a loan. Avoid any sketchy online loans or loan sharks.

Payment Plans

Some surgical centres offer payment plans as a way to afford their procedures. You can opt for plans of varying lengths, such as three months, six months, or twelve months. Whether or not they will accept your application will depend on your credit score and if they require an initial down payment.

As with a medical loan, you may become subject to high fees if you fail to make a complete payment. Only agree to a payment plan if you know for sure that you can afford it.

Credit Cards

Although not recommended, you could always use your credit card to cover your breast explant surgery. The procedure may cost upwards of $12,000 depending on the individual and the surgeon. Depending on how well you’ve paid off your credit card, you may be able to cover the entire cost with one.

The biggest problem with using your credit card is the high-interest rate attached to it. Failure to repay it every month will lead to a direct impact on your credit score. You’ll also be at risk if your financial institution decides to cancel your credit card.

8 FAQs and Answers About a Breast Explant Surgery

breast reduction

Are you struggling with the decision of breast implant removal (explant surgery)? It’s a path tread by many, yet each experience is profoundly unique. The concept of breast implant removal (explant surgery) can seem overwhelming.

With every step, questions and uncertainties can arise: What will my body look like afterward? How will I feel? The answers to these questions are crucial, as they shape your decision-making process.

This article illuminates the intricacies of breast explant, the reasons behind the choice of breast lift after explant surgery, and the nuances of the procedure itself. Read on to find out more about this process.

1. What is Breast Explant Surgery?

Breast explant surgery is a medical procedure to remove breast implants. The process involves the careful extraction of the breast implant along with any scar tissue that may have formed around it.

This procedure is distinct from breast augmentation or implant insertion. It focuses instead on safely and effectively returning the breasts to their natural state as much as possible.

2. Why Do Women Choose to Remove Breast Implants?

Women opt for breast implant removal (explant surgery) for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common motivations include physical discomfort or pain associated with the implants, changes in personal aesthetic preferences, or health concerns.

As women age or experience lifestyle changes, their perceptions of beauty and comfort can shift. This can lead them to reconsider their implants.

Physical discomfort, such as back or shoulder pain, can arise from the weight and positioning of the implants. Additionally, some women may experience medical complications like capsular contracture, where scar tissue forms tightly around the implant, causing pain and distortion.

Evolving preferences regarding breast appearance play a significant role. What once seemed desirable might no longer align with a person’s current self-image or lifestyle. Aesthetic changes over time, such as sagging or asymmetry, can also prompt the decision for implant removal.

Health concerns are another crucial factor. Women may experience symptoms attributed to their implants which lead them to seek breast implant removal (explant surgery) for relief. While not always medically substantiated, the choice often reflects a desire for a more natural state of health and well-being.

3. What Does Breast Explant Surgery Process Involve?

The explant surgery process involves a series of carefully executed surgical techniques. The primary goal is to remove the breast implant and any associated scar tissue safely and effectively. This procedure is often more complex than the initial implant surgery and requires the expertise of an experienced plastic surgeon.

Initially, the plastic surgeon makes an incision, typically following the lines of the original breast augmentation scars to minimise additional scarring. Through this incision, the plastic surgeon carefully extracts the implant and any hardened scar tissue, a process known as capsulectomy.

The method and extent of surgery depend on various factors, including the type of implant, the presence of scar tissue, and the individual’s anatomy. In some cases, additional procedures, such as a breast lift, may be recommended to enhance the breast’s appearance post-implant removal.

After the removal, the plastic surgeon closes the incisions with precision, aiming for minimal scarring and optimal healing. The entire process reflects a blend of medical expertise and aesthetic consideration to ensure not only the safety of the patient but also a pleasing outcome in terms of breast appearance.

4. What Are the Risks of Breast Implant Removal (Explant Surgery)?

Like any surgical procedure, breast implant removal (explant surgery) comes with its own set of risks. These can include infection, bleeding, and changes in breast sensation. Additionally, there’s the risk of aesthetic issues such as uneven breast appearance or scarring.

At The Lotus Institute, these risks are managed with the utmost care by our certified plastic surgeon. Our approach includes thorough pre-surgical assessments, the use of advanced surgical techniques, and meticulous post-operative care. We prioritise patient safety and are committed to providing clear, honest communication about potential risks and how we mitigate them.

5. What Can I Expect During Recovery?

Recovery after breast implant removal (explant surgery) varies for each individual. Generally, patients can expect some soreness and swelling in the initial days post-surgery. Most are able to return to normal activities after a few weeks, though full recovery can take several weeks.

At The Lotus Institute, we ensure you have all the information and support needed for a smooth recovery. Our team provides detailed guidelines on post-operative care, including pain management and wound care, to facilitate a comfortable recovery process.

6. How Will My Breasts Look Post-Explant Surgery?

After breast implant removal (explant surgery), your breasts’ appearance will depend on factors like the size of the implants removed, your skin’s elasticity, and the duration the implants were in place. Initially, there might be some sagging or shape changes.

For many, a breast lift after explant surgery is an option to enhance the breast appearance. This procedure can help lift and reshape the breasts to provide a more aesthetically pleasing contour.

7. Are There Alternatives to Breast Explant Surgery?

While breast explant surgery is a definitive solution for removing implants, there are alternatives depending on the individual’s needs and concerns. Options may include a breast revision surgery to replace or adjust the implants, or non-surgical treatments for minor issues.

8. How Do I Prepare for Surgery and What Follow-Up is Required?

Preparation for breast implant removal (explant surgery) involves several steps. You’ll be advised to stop certain medications, arrange for assistance post-surgery, and follow specific guidelines on eating and drinking.

Follow-up care is crucial for a successful outcome. This includes attending scheduled check-ups with your plastic surgeon, adhering to recovery guidelines, and monitoring for any signs of complications.

At The Lotus Institute, we provide comprehensive follow-up care to ensure your recovery is on track and address any concerns promptly.

Round Vs. Teardrop Implants

Breast Enlargement

Breast augmentation involves placing implants in the breasts to enhance their size, shape and fullness. If you’ve been considering getting breast implants but don’t know the first thing about it — we’re here to help. There are many factors to consider when choosing breast implants, including the implant size, shape, texture and material.

One of the most important decisions is selecting the right implant shape — the most popular implant shapes being round and teardrop. In this article, we will compare teardrop vs round implants to help guide your decision on which type of implant might best be suited for you.

Teardrop breast implants vs round

Whether you’re considering breast implants for reconstructive purposes to correct congenital defects or to restore your natural breast size post-mastectomy, we’re here to guide you through the pros and cons of teardrop vs round, starting with round implants.

Round implants

As the name suggests, round implants, the most common type of implants, are circular and create a fuller, more pronounced look for your bust. They add fullness to the upper and lower part of your breast for more defined cleavage.

Pros

  • Round implants offer a fuller and more dramatic look to the breasts.
  • They are less expensive than teardrop implants.
  • They are less likely to rotate after surgery, which can cause an asymmetrical appearance.

Cons

  • Round implants may appear less natural than teardrop implants, depending on whether it looks proportionate to your overall figure.
  • They may not be suitable for women with very little natural breast tissue, as they can create a round, artificial look.
  • There is a risk of rippling for patients who may have thin skin, which can be visible through the skin.

Round implants may be ideal for women who desire a fuller look to their breasts. They’re also the better alternative for women with more breast tissue who do not require a significant amount of lift or shaping.

Teardrop implants

Teardrop implants, also known as anatomical implants, have a more natural teardrop shape, with more fullness at the bottom of the breast and less at the top. Their oval shape has a natural slope and a textured shell to help prevent accidental rotation.

Pros

  • Teardrop implants create a more natural look to the breasts.
  • They are less likely to ripple or fold, which can be visible through the skin.
  • They are ideal for women with little natural breast tissue or who desire a lift and shaping effect.

Cons

  • Teardrop implants are more expensive than round implants.
  • They have a higher risk of rotation after surgery, which can cause an asymmetrical appearance.
  • They may not offer as much cleavage as round implants.

Teardrop implants are well-suited to women who desire natural-looking breast augmentation, particularly those with little natural breast tissue or who require a lift and shaping effect.

Choosing between round vs teardrop implants

When deciding between round vs teardrop implants, you should be clear about your goals during your consultation with your surgeon. If you’re considering breast augmentation, ask yourself, what bothers you about your natural breasts?

Rest assured, the decision between teardrop vs round isn’t solely in your hands. At The Lotus Institute, our highly trained and experienced surgeon, Dr Peter Widdowson, is a aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon with over 30 years of experience. He will help advise you on the pros and cons of teardrop breast implants vs round and what option best suits you, considering your body type and desired outcome.

Women with a wider chest and more natural breast tissue may be better suited to round implants, while those with a narrow chest and little natural breast tissue may benefit from teardrop implants. Ultimately, your surgeon will help you decide which option is right for you.

How Much Does A Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Cost?

tummy tuck

From ageing taking its toll to giving birth and successfully losing weight, many people choose to invest in the tummy tuck procedure (Abdominoplasty) to change how their body looks and feels.

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a procedure that surgically removes excess skin tissue and fat from the stomach and tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall.

If you’re ready to  find out more information on a abdominoplasty, our article will answer one of the most-asked questions, “How much is a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty)?” We’ll detail the costs incurred and whether it’s covered by Medicare and private health insurance.

Understanding the tummy tuck’s (Abdominoplasty) cost in Australia

Depending on the professionals you’ve chosen to work with and the type of abdominoplasty you’re most interested in, your tummy tuck’s (Abdominoplasty) cost can range from $10,000 to $30,000.

The factors that contribute to the cost of a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) in Australia include:

  • Surgeon’s fees
  • Anaesthetist’s fees
  • Hospital fees
  • Medication and medical tests
  • Dressings and support garments

For transparent pricing tailored to match your needs and level of care, contact The Lotus Institute to schedule a consultation for a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) on the Gold Coast with Dr Peter Widdowson.

With over 30 years of experience in plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, you’ll be provided with a complete overview of the costs involved, what the procedure entails, what you can expect to feel on your surgery’s completion and how the team will provide you with exceptional aftercare for complete peace of mind.

The cost of extended vs. mini tummy tucks (Abdominoplasty)

When undergoing a Abdominoplasty, various techniques are involved in achieving a tighter mid-core, whether you’re targeting an area of concern or want to treat your whole abdominals.

From reverse tummy tucks (Abdominoplasty) that remove excess skin from your upper abdomen and pull the skin tissue up to lower abdominoplasty that targets the lower belly, a mini tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) — while still a complex surgery — requires a shorter procedure and may only need an overnight stay in hospital. With a shorter hospital stay and smaller treatment area, your mini tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) on the Gold Coast may not cost as much as a full tummy tuck procedure.

On the other hand, extended tummy tucks (Abdominoplasty) involve wider incisions and remove considerably more fat and skin tissue than a full abdominoplasty. The cost may increase due to a longer operation, as well as an additional level of care and nights in the hospital.

Will Medicare and private health insurance cover my tummy tuck’s (Abdominoplasty) cost?

Medicare doesn’t contribute funds to any elective or aesthetic surgery. However, limited provisions enable it to provide some funding for your tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) cost in Australia if it’s medically necessary and will improve your health.

This may include post-partum patients under Medicare item number 30175 who are suffering from diastasis over three centimetres and experiencing moderate pain and other complications. Similarly, people who have lost significant amounts of weight — at least five BMI points whose excess skin tissue is impeding their life may be able to make a claim under Medicare item number 30177.

Few private health insurers cover elective surgeries, and those that do may restrict that level of care to their clients on their premium packages, and you may need to delay until the waiting period has expired. Those that do offer it may also require you to meet the qualifying criteria set by Medicare. For information related to your own circumstances, please contact your health insurer for detailed information.

How Much Does Facelift Surgery Cost?

facelift

Wrinkles are a natural part of ageing caused by genetics, sun damage and the skin losing its firmness and bounce due to a lack of collagen and elastin production. While some people might embrace and feel confident about these natural lines, others may want to choose to undergo a face lift surgery.

  • Want to improve the skin elasticity and muscle tone in your face?
  • Experiencing a loss of skin tone, loose skin or contours around your neck or chin?
  • Are you in good health, following an exercise regime and maintaining a balanced diet?

If you’ve answered yes to any of the above, you may benefit from a consultation with our surgeon.

Types of Injectables: Know the Difference

Injectables - The Lotus Institute

What are the differences between the different injectable products offered by The Lotus Institute. This article covers the three main injectable products used by our cosmetic clinic – muscle relaxants, absorbable fillers and non-absorbable fillers.

What are muscle relaxants and how do they work?

Muscle relaxants are not used to fill lines. Instead, they work by temporarily stopping the muscles that create wrinkles from working, which has results in the softening of lines and helps prevent new lines from forming. The most common areas treated by muscle relaxants are mid forehead, frown lines, horizontal forehead creases and the crow’s feet or smile lines around the eyes. The results of muscle relaxants usually last three to four months.

What are the main concerns with using muscle relaxants for reducing wrinkles on the face?

  • Appropriate selection of injection points
  • Possible drooping of the muscles

What are absorbable fillers and what are they used for?

Absorbable fillers are mainly used in fine lines on the surface of the skin, subcutaneously (under the skin) and in the deeper tissues of the face. This is why different thicknesses can be injected. The most common treatment areas are in the forehead, marionette lines and nasolabial folds to reduce lines, in the cheeks and lips to add volume and to reshape the nose, chin and jawline. The results of absorbable fillers usually last six to 12 months for products injected on the surface and up to two years for products injected deeply.

What are the main concerns with using absorbable fillers?

  • Infection
  • Absorbable fillers must be performed by experienced professionals for successful results

What are non-absorbable fillers?

Non-absorbable fillers are only used subcutaneously (under the skin), not on the surface layers of the skin. These fillers are often referred to as an injectable implant. The most common treatment areas are in the cheeks, jawline, chin, nasolabial folds and nose. The results of non-absorbable fillers usually last a minimum of five years+.

What are the main concerns with using non-absorbable fillers as an anti-wrinkle treatment?

  • Infection
  • Possible inflammatory response
  • Non-absorbable fillers may not be suitable for all patients, correct patient selection should be observed
  • Non-absorbable fillers must only be performed by experienced, trained injectors in order ensure correct placement and that safe protocols are followed.

Revive7 Lash Serum is New to The Lotus Institute

Before and after pictures of lash serum

As the 2022 Clean Beauty award winner, Revive7 Science is committed to creating products that are scientifically proven, contain natural, clean ingredients with no negative side-effects, and are gentle enough for sensitive skin.

What is in the  Revive 7 Lash and Brow Serum?

Revive7 Science has selected ingredients that supply nutrients and protein to the hair, hair follicles, and skin. These nutrients promote healthier, stronger hair, reducing breakage, and increasing volume.

Unlike other lower-quality eyelash growth serums, Revive7 does NOT contain Prostaglandin (an ingredient that changes iris colour). The Revive7 ingredient list only uses high-quality natural ingredients in the serum formula.

Established and formulated in 2012. Revive7 includes a unique ingredient called myristoyl pentapeptide-17. It is a plant-based antioxidant peptide that is often recommended to stimulate hair growth at the follicle.

Benefits of using the Revive 7 Lash and Brow Serum

Revive7 is compatible and safe for eyelash extensions. It doesn’t contain alcohol and won’t loosen the eyelash extension adhesive. In fact, for those who have eyelash extensions  it’s vital to apply a lash serum to keep the natural eyelash roots healthy as the extensions can cause a lot of damage to the natural lash roots.

Revive7 Science has become a leader in the industry, because it prioritises clean and ethical beauty. Key benefits of Revive7 include:

  1. An innovative Formula containing Biotin & myristoyl pentapeptide-17
  2. Natural Plant-Based Ingredients, Cruelty-Free
  3. 7 active ingredients ONLY
  4. NO Prostaglandin or Paraben Used
  5. Custom Blend of High-Quality Natural Ingredients
  6. 97% of the users saw results within 21 days
  7. Not Greasy or Oily
  8. No odour smell of Alcohol or Chemicals
  9. Not Tested on Animals

5 Tips for Long, Healthy and Beautiful Lashes

From diet to nutrient-packed serums, here’s everything you need to know. We put our lashes through a lot on a daily basis. These delicate hairs are constantly curled, lifted, tinted and even extended, yet it often comes as a shock when we see a few stragglers on our cotton pads or in bathroom sinks. If you’re struggling to lengthen and strengthen your lashes, it may be time to take a more holistic approach.

From strengthening supplements to lengthening serums, such as Revive7 Science’s award-winning Revive7 Lash & Brow Serum, here are five ways you can start growing healthier and longer lashes.

1. Lash serum

If you’re eager to speed up your lash lengthening process, but in a natural way, it may be time to try a lash serum like the Revive7 Lash & Brow Serum. This new product was the winner of the Best Clean Beauty category in the 2022 Beauty Awards and has been clinically shown to improve the health and volume of your lashes. This clean, Canadian-made formula is made with seven natural and active ingredients, including hyaluronic acid, collagen, biotin and pumpkin seed extract. They all work together to repair any lash damage and supply nutrients and protein to your lash hairs, hair follicles and surrounding skin. Within seven to 21 days, you’ll see that your lashes are healthier, stronger, more voluminous, and less prone to breakage. Just apply it once or twice a day to your eyelid line—it’s as simple as that.

2. Nutrition

Just like your skin or nails, what you eat may also have an impact on your lash health, so make sure your diet is rich in hair-promoting proteins, such as eggs (biotin). It’s also important to ensure you’re getting sufficient vitamins A, E and C through fresh fruits and vegetables. For an extra boost, consider taking daily vitamins or supplements, as well. Niacin (vitamin B-3) has been proven to help improve blood flow to hair follicles which encourages hair length and fullness.

3. Skip lash treatments

Beyond what you apply or consume, give your lashes a chance to grow by skipping any lifting or extension treatments. While these may scratch your instant gratification itch by offering quick results, they may also be damaging and delay your growth. While you’re at it, make sure to also give your lashes a break from mascara once in a while.

4. Use clean makeup

We’re not telling you to stop wearing makeup entirely, but you may want to put more thought into what you’re applying to your lashes. Try investing in higher quality and clean mascaras, they’ll be less damaging to your lashes and may result in more length and volume over time.

5. Use gentle makeup removal

Finally, treat your lashes with the love and kindness they deserve! Stop aggressively scrubbing or rubbing your makeup off every night. Instead, invest in gentle and non-irritating makeup removers and lather with love, not anger.

Is your surgeon qualified to be called a Specialist Plastic Surgeon?

Qualified Surgeons - The Lotus Institute

The term Plastic Surgery comes from the Greek word plastike (teckhne) or the art of modelling or sculpting.

Plastic Surgery on the Gold Coast is a growing industry for both men and women.  New techniques and advancement in the aesthetic industry has increased the number of men and women who want to undergo plastic surgery procedures.

Dr.  Peter Widdowson, Director, at The Lotus Institute, on the Gold Coast, is a Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon with over 25 years’ experience in this specialised area.

All plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery is performed by our qualified Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Peter Widdowson who has extensive experience in cosmetic, plastic reconstructive and laser procedures.

Our Plastic Surgeons are members of a number of boards through their qualifications which include, Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, (ASPS) Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons  (ASAPS) , American Society of Plastic Surgeon, British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and Fellow of Royal Society of Plastic Surgeons (FRACS). Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (SACS).

Cosmetic procedures also come under the name of Aesthetic surgery, including Facial Rejuvenation (Face lift) Neck and Eye Lifts – including The Lotus Institute’s M.I.F.A.C.E procedure.

Our Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons perform an array of other procedures including Breast Enlargement, Breast Reduction, Breast Lift and Reconstruction, Otoplasty, Body contouring – Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction and body lift.

KNOWING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PLASTIC SURGEON AND COSMETIC SURGEON

Plastic surgery training involves a broad scope of procedures to restore the body’s normal appearance and function, where cosmetic surgery training focuses exclusively on aesthetic procedures. Yet many plastic surgeons offer cosmetic procedures at their practice.

Plastic Surgeons qualify in:

  • Medical training
  • Surgical qualifications and recognition by medical boards
  • Surgery specialities (skills, expertise, and surgical study)
  • Technical expertise (ongoing education and advanced surgical technique conferences with leading plastic surgery experts)
  • Significant experience

Currently in Australia, it is legal for any doctor with a basic medical degree to perform surgery. However, only Specialist Plastic Surgeons have a minimum of 12 years medical and surgical education, including 5 years of specialist post graduate training in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

When making your decision in selecting your surgeon, remember that the Medical Board of Australia states that the “Specialist Plastic Surgeon” title can only be used by Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) approved specialist surgeons in the recognised specialty of Plastic Surgery.

There are many misunderstandings about plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons and their roles, with many patients mistakenly believing they are equivalent when they are not. Many plastic surgeons choose to focus on cosmetic surgery, which has led to the terms often being used interchangeably, but this is technically incorrect.

There are also medical practitioners in Australia, such as GPs, who legally call themselves cosmetic surgeons. However, many of the procedures they perform should only be done by a certified plastic surgeon. These misperceptions regarding the industry highlight the need for more patient education on the importance of credentials.

Dr. Peter Widdowson (Plastic Surgeon) here at The Lotus Institute on the Gold Coast are here to help you with answers to these misperceptions and will guide you through your surgical or aesthetic journey.

Please Call The Lotus Institute on the Gold Coast for your Plastic Surgery Consultation and Non-Surgical Consultations on (07) 55094488.

Breast Augmentation Mammaplasty on the Gold Coast

Breast Augmentation Mammaplasty On The Gold Coast

There are many different breast surgery procedures The Lotus Institute, on the Gold Coast can perform. Our goals are to give the patient the best possible advice and exceptional patient care.

BAM

A breast augmentation mammaplasty, or breast enlargement, is a surgical procedure designed to increase the size, shape or fullness of the breasts. Many patients will undergo this surgery for not only aesthetic reasons but also reconstructive medical purposes.

In the instance of a breast cancer, a mastectomy can be performed and as part of breast reconstruction a breast implant/s inserted into the chest to complete the reconstructive process. Another area where breast augmentation is used is for patients who have developmental abnormalities of the breast called tuberous breast. Implants are placed to complete the corrective process but also for symmetrising purposes.

A Consultation with our experienced Plastic Surgeon Dr. Peter at The Lotus Institute on the Gold Coast in Southport, is highly recommended to determine if you are a candidate for this procedure.

IMPLANTS

The type of implant and size will be discussed at your initial consultation. At a secondary complementary consultation, we will again reconfirm you implant choice prior to your surgery. This appointment allows time for us to verify the sizing and further requirements needed for your procedure.

In general, there are two types of breast implants – silicone gel or saline (made from sterile salt water). Silicone gel implants are more commonly used and available in round or teardrop shape.

It will be discussed with your surgeon at your consultation where the implants will be placed within the pocket of your breast tissue. They can be situated in two different positions relative to the breast tissue and the pectoral muscles that lies beneath or dual plane position which is: placing breast implants partially under both the breast gland and the pectoralis major muscle simultaneously

POST OPERATIVELY

The recovery period from this procedure is an individual one, and you may experience affects from the general anaesthetic, some tightness in the chest area along with some general discomfort as your muscles adjust to the implants.

You will be given some pain medication and possible antibiotics post operatively.

You will require a carer for the first 24-48 hours as breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia and in most cases on a day surgery basis.

On the day of surgery, you will be discharged home with bandages and only in some cases depending on the individual, drainage tubes and will be back at The Lotus Institute within 48 hours after surgery for post operative care and removal of drains. At this time, you will have been given your post operative bra and the 2nd one optional for you at your first post operative appointment.

Our experienced Nursing Team are here to help you during your post operative period and this care is inclusive of your surgery costings.

Once your healing phase has begun and at the appropriate time during your wound care management, our Nurses will advise of scar therapies and gels available to assist with your scar healing.

A decision to have this procedure should be made when you are satisfied with the information you have received and believe that you are well informed.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should always seek a second opinion from a FRACS certified surgeon.

The 411 about your skin from A-Zinc!

skincare

A-Z for the SKIN

The skin is our body’s largest organ, made of water, protein, fats, and minerals. The skin protects us from germs and regulates body temperature. Nerves in the skin help us feel sensation such as hot and cold sensitivities. The skin also supports our vitamin D stores.

The skin is made up of two main layers:  The Epidermis &  The DermisThe Layers of Skin

The outer layer of the skin (epidermis) is mostly made up of flat, scale-like cells called squamous cells.  Under the squamous cells are round cells called basal cells.  The deepest part of the epidermis also contains melanocytes, cells that produce melanin gives the skin colour.

Regardless of our skin colour it is always important to have the appropriate sun protection such as SPF30 or higher . (Uberzinc by Synergie Skin is recommended with 21% Zinc Oxide with moisturising, healing, SPF & UVB protection)

Here at The Lotus Institute, we advise our clients and recommend products to help nourish, heal, moisturise, protect, hydrate, and exfoliate the skin. Our A-Z skin kit is one of our products recommended with the A, B, C serums, UltraCleanse cleanser and UberZinc for ultimate sun protection. This is a great sampler for patients who are new to Synergie but also makes for a terrific way to protect your skin while touring as the packaging is travel size.

It is always recommended we have regular skin checks with a qualified skin specialist to check for any sun damage, skin cancers or melanomas. It is a priority to attend to any skin issues due to sun exposure or other outside elements that may harm our skin.

Skin in the Media

Recently Channel 7 aired a very important documentary called Skin Deep by Deborah Hutton. Deborah Hutton, media personality, who herself underwent skin cancer surgery to her face, talks about the importance of maintaining good skin health protecting the skin from the sun and UV exposure with simple steps such as wearing a hat and skin protection. Deborah Hutton talks with a diverse group of people, with different skin types to discuss their experience and journey, through exposure to the sun over the years, which attributed to their skin cancers.

Skin cancers are not exclusive just to the older generation but also to younger Australians, where there has been a higher number of cases of melanomas in people from the ages of mid-twenties to mid-thirties in recent years.

It is highly recommended to watch this documentary to learn more about the importance of your largest organ, the skin.  Please click on the link to watch this important documentary.

Out of this documentary came the wonderful news, of a new hospital to be built in Melbourne for the further research, treatment, and study of melanomas.

Surgical Consultations for regional, interstate and international patients

gold coast plastic surgery

Patients have many different reasons to travel to the Gold Coast for surgery.  They may choose, the Gold Coast, because of the reputation of our Doctor, Dr. Peter Widdowson here at The Lotus Institute, in Southport.

Also, a patient may have had a recommendation from family members or friends who have had surgery by one of our surgeons.

No matter what the reason, we travel with you on this journey.  The Lotus Institute team are here for your pre and post-operative appointments and answering your questions leading up to your surgery.

If you are unable to travel to your first consultation, we will arrange a phone /video consultation with your Doctor. However, all patients are required to receive at least one face-to-face consultation at least 7 days before the procedure. Once you have decided on a date for surgery, a face-to-face consultation will be necessary with your chosen surgeon. Your surgeon will decide at this consultation if you are ready to proceed to surgery.

One of our Team will assist you with your pre op paperwork and pre-operative photos and will assist you with any questions you may have leading up to your surgery.

In preparation for your consult, we do require that you send some photos through of the area/s of concern.  It may help that someone other than yourself take these photos.  The angles we require are front, both sides of the body, a ¾ view and a back view.

A referral from your GP is now required in order to provide medical information, regarding your procedure and outline any detailed medical history.  This referral may include a list of your medications and, previous information of any surgical procedures you may have had in the past.

We will also ask you to fill out a patient detail form and sign an informed financial return these to us.

Regarding weight loss surgery patients, we may require your present weight, height and BMI before a consultation is made as our surgeons will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery for e.g. Bilateral Breast Reduction, Abdominoplasty, Brachioplasty, Thighplasty procedures.  Should any patients not meet the criteria, our surgeons will advise the best course of action towards achieving your goals and outcomes.

Your length of stay on the Gold Coast after your procedure will of course depend on the type of procedure/s and the individual’s healing process.  It is recommended you stay at least 7-10 days after your discharge from hospital for a procedure such as Breast Surgery.

For Facial surgery, Abdominoplasty, Thighplasty (Thigh lift), Brachioplasty (Arm Lift), these procedures require a 3-5 night stay and a minimum 10-14 days stay on the Gold Coast to ensure adequate healing time and for the opportunity for your surgeon to provide you with clearance before return home.

We have some recommendations for hotels or apartments for you to stay and highly recommend you have someone accompany you for support and transportation to and from your post operative appointments.

If you have no support with you, there are services available separate to The Lotus Institute , that we can recommend for you. These services are an additional cost to you, however there are some services offered should your procedure be medical in nature that may be covered by your Private Health Fund, dependant on your level of cover.

After any sedation or general anaesthetic, you will need assistance for travelling from the hospital to your accommodation and it is highly advisable you have someone stay with you overnight after your procedure. You will need a support person to accompany you to appointments within 24 to 48 hours post operatively to our rooms.

We do hope this may answer some of your questions regarding travelling to The Lotus Institute on the Gold Coast for your surgical needs.

Please call The Lotus Institute, in Southport, Gold Coast on (07) 55094488 to book your Consultation

tummy tuck post pregnancy

A WIN!

From the 1st July 2022 Medicare item number 30175 will be available for women that are experiencing muscle separation of the abdomen as a result of pregnancy (for a medical tummy tuck procedure ((abdominoplasty)). There is criteria to meet as outlined by Medicare below:

The Criteria

As stated by Medicare: Radical abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), with repair of rectus diastasis, excision of skin and subcutaneous tissue, and transposition of umbilicus, not being a laparoscopic procedure, where the patient has an abdominal wall defect as a consequence of pregnancy, if:

(a) The patient:

(i) Has a diastasis of at least 3cm measured by diagnostic imaging prior to this service; and

(ii) has symptoms of at least moderate severity of pain or discomfort at the site of the diastasis in the abdominal wall during functional use and/or low back pain or urinary symptoms likely due to rectus diastasis that have been documented in the patient’s records by the practitioner providing this service; and

Knowing if you are eligible

Once you have had a through examination and consultation with our plastic and reconstructive surgeons and they are satisfied you meet the eligibility for the 30175-item number (for tummy tuck ((abdominoplasty)), we can determine the best course of treatment for you, put together an accurate surgical plan and provide you with a precise quotation. This quotation will outline surgical fees and rebates from Medicare and Private health insurance (if applicable).

We recommend you seeing your GP should you feel, you may have some muscle separation and you are considering an abdominoplasty. Your GP can arrange an ultrasound prior to your consultation with us and provide you with a referral. This can assist you when seeing your chosen surgeon to gain the most out of your consultation.

Next Steps

Booking a consultation with Dr Peter Widdowson

You can contact our front reception team on 0755094488, email us at lotus@lotus-institute.com.au or contact us via our social media page on Facebook or Instagram to schedule an appointment and to find out more.

This is a huge win for all (Medicare eligible) women in Australia, as previously this tummy tuck procedure (abdominoplasty) was deemed cosmetic in nature. With the procedure having a medically attributed item number, it now means that the procedure is Medicare rebatable and that most (if not all) private health insurance companies (provided you have the right level of cover) will assist in covering some costs associated. The procedure will become more financially accessible in the private sector which we feel is fantastic news.
